In 1983 Bob Hope left from my Air National Guard Base in Van Nuys Calif for his Christmas Tour in Lebanon. One of the things that struck me was that the "stars" who were going with him all stayed in their own little group after they arrived until the TV news crews got set up, then they came over and acted friendly. Except a guy named Nipsey Russell. He came over and started working the crowd as soon as he got there, telling jokes and asking about people. He came across as a genuinely nice guy who wasn't there for the publicity. That's not to disparage the rest of them because they did give up their Christmas at home, after all, but I never forgot Nipsey Russell's kindness.

Merry Christmas, John.

Prayers and best wishes for a much healthier New Year.

I was also in the 1st Cav, 2/5 Infantry during that event. We didn’t have any seats at the show. Our job, with base at Bien Hua was protecting the area all the way to Zuan Loc.
